The intent at Wicker Restoration is to preserve furniture and traditional weaving skills through restoration and client education all the while keeping your family stories alive. Expanding artistic design in weaving custom contemporary furniture and basketry is encouraged.
From a farming background in Eastern Oregon to Oregon State University Home Economics, Karen Murray learned and practiced life skills and arts by creating, restoring, and teaching.
Karen believes in the value of continued education and sharing her knowledge with others so everyone involved rises to a higher level of understanding. She has earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Home Economics from OSU. She has taught at Central Oregon Community College, and now from her own shop.
Working at a furniture store while at OSU, Karen learned hand caning. A broader knowledge of wicker restoration came while she owned a furniture refinishing business for a decade in the Willamette Valley.
Her fascination with wicker became a passion resulting in her business, Wicker Restoration. Varieties of materials used, intricacies of design, how materials are acquired, histories of manufacturing, and all your family stories contributed to having piqued her interest.
This set of unique skills based on 40+ years of experience is available in Central Oregon where those in need of these services are delighted to find an accomplished artist who can accommodate them.
Structural repairs on all types of furniture are done as needed, in addition to the weaving categories shown below. Included among materials used are cane, Shaker tape, seagrass cords, Danish cords, hand split hickory bark splint, round and flat rattan reeds, as well as rawhide.
Vacationing clients can schedule project restoration or individual classes to learn desired weaving skills while they are here enjoying our wonderful part of the world. Wicker pieces have been entrusted to Karen for restoration from places as varied as New Hampshire and Sun Valley, Idaho to San Diego, Seattle and Arizona.
Wicker furniture adds a welcoming and comfortable
ambiance to any room. When kept in good condition, it appreciates
in value and becomes most collectable. Check your attic for
old family pieces needing repair. Have them turned into heritage
gifts for the next generation.
